WHEN CALLED TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY, 1LT MARK DOOLEY LEFT A LETTER FOR HIS FAMILY, IN THE EVENT HE DID NOT RETURN.  MARK’S LETTER WAS LATER QUOTED BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH DURING HIS 2006 MEMORIAL DAY ADDRESS AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY.

“…REMEMBER THAT MY LEAVING WAS IN THE SERVICE OF SOMETHING THAT WE LOVED, AND THAT MOST PEOPLE CAN’T COMPREHEND ITS SCOPE.  CHERISH IN YOUR HEART THAT IT WASN’T DONE FOR ANY ABSTRACT REASON LIKE A FLAG OR A FOREIGN GOVERNMENT’S SUCCESS, BUT OUR SACRED HONOR.”

MARK WAS BORN IN OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, ON JULY 15, 1978.  HE GRADUATED FROM WALLKILL HIGH SCHOOL IN NEW YORK STATE, AND ATTENDED COLLEGE IN VERMONT AS A MEMBER OF NORWICH UNIVERSITY’S CORPS OF CADETS (2001).

MARK BEGAN A CAREER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AS A WINDHAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY AND GRADUATED FROM THE VERMONT POLICE ACADEMY WITH THE 74TH BASIC TRAINING CLASS.  IN 2004, HE WAS HIRED TO SERVE THE TOWN OF WILMINGTON AS A POLICE OFFICER.  MARK WAS A DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVANT WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM.

MARK ALSO HAD A STRONG DESIRE TO SERVE HIS NATION.  HE ENLISTED IN THE VERMONT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD AND WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 3RD BATTALION, 172ND MOUNTAIN INFANTRY REGIMENT.  MARK WAS COMMISSIONED AS AN OFFICER, AND GRADUATED FROM THE U.S. ARMY’S PRESTIGIOUS RANGER SCHOOL, RANGER CLASS 06-04.

MARK WAS A RESPECTED AND ADMIRED SOLDIER WHO POSSESSED A NATURAL ABILITY TO LEAD.  HIS CHARISMA, DEDICATION, LOYALTY, AND COMPASSION EARNED THE DEVOTION OF HIS FELLOW SOLDIERS AND THE PRAISE OF HIS COMMANDING OFFICERS.

THE QUALITIES THAT DEFINED MARK IN HIS MILITARY CAREER ECHOED THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE.  HE HAD A PERSONALITY TO WHICH PEOPLE WERE DRAWN.  MARK EXCELLED AT CHALLENGES AND INSPIRED THOSE AROUND HIM.

IN JUNE OF 2005, MARK ANSWERED HIS NATION’S CALL TO SERVE AND WAS DEPLOYED TO RAMADI, IRAQ AS PART OF “TASK FORCE SABER”, IN SUPPORT OF OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.  MARK SERVED AS A PLATOON LEADER FOR 2ND PLATOON, ALPHA COMPANY.

ON SEPTEMBER 19, 2005, AT 9:02 AM (EST), MARK WAS INVESTIGATING REPORTS OF SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY IN RAMADI, IRAQ, WHEN A POWERFUL BOMB DETONATED, STRIKING THE ARMORED VEHICLE IN WHICH HE WAS RIDING.  THE BLAST KILLED MARK, AS WELL AS SERGEANT MICHAEL EGAN, AND SPECIALIST WILLIAM V. FERNANDEZ (MEMBERS OF PENNSYLVANIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD).

1LT MARK DOOLEY WAS IMMENSELY PROUD OF HIS SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY, STATE, AND NATION.  HE WILL LIVE FOREVER IN THE HEARTS OF ALL WHO KNEW HIM.  HE NOW RESTS IN A SACRED PLACE OF VALOR, AT THE ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY (SECTION# 60/GRAVE# 8640).

*****2014 RACE RESULTS*****

ltmarkdooley5k@gmail.com

In honor of 1LT Mark H. Dooley
In memory of all our fallen heroes...

(Colin Lozito, 2014 graduate of the Twin Valley High School,
receiving the LT Mark H. Dooley Award and Scholarship - from SGT Matthew Murano - WPD)

Mark Dooley was a graduate of Norwich (Military) University in Vermont.  He began a career in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff for the Windham County Sheriff's Department and later worked as a police officer for the Town of Wilmington, Vermont.

Mark also served his country as a First Lieutenant with the Vermont Army National Guard.   One of Mark's many accomplishments was his completion of the Army's rigorous Ranger School.

LT Mark Dooley was killed in action while proudly serving his country in Iraq on September 19, 2005.  He will be forever missed.

Please help us keep the memory strong and support this event!  If you don't wish to walk or run the 5K race, you can still join us on race day and show your support.

Before he was deployed to Iraq, Mark gave his parents a letter, in the event he didn't come home...please take the time to read this letter.  It is a true reflection of the caliber of person Mark Dooley was.

Dad, Mom and Charlie;
It is immensely hard to put into words raw emotion or put down on one piece of paper what you want people to remember you by. However, if you're reading this then I am not able to convey either in person...

Follow this link to read the rest of Mark's letter and learn more about Mark
